An Hao - May 2006
Currently, An Hao village has over 680 elementary students. The average distance between each elementary school is over 10 km. This condition hampers the efforts to motivate and get young children to attend school. The local community worked with Sunflower Mission to construct a 4 class room school at Thien Tue hamlet to serve the needs of the students at this location. This 4 class room school replaced a 1 temporary class room existed at this hamlet. In addition to Thien Tue’s, children from 2 other nearby hamlets will also be attending classes at this new school.
Located in the Tinh Bien district of An Giang, An Hao village is one of the frontier communities next to the border of Cambodia. Due to the poor soil conditions in this area, people can not make a living based on agriculture activities. Therefore, almost all adults in the village go to other areas to work as day laborers. Annual income per person is 1,500,000 VND or 100 USD. The needs for education and hope for the future are critical here to stem the trend of children leaving, or coerce to leave, the area in seeking promises of jobs.
Sunflower Mission funded a 4 class room school completes with furniture and ½ the cost for paving the school yard. The local community contributed leveled land, toilet, fencing, gate, and ½ the cost for paving the school yard. The project groundbreaking was held in March 06 and the school was completed in May 06. Our President, Elena Tran, led a team of members and supporters to Viet Nam to help complete the school and attend its completion ceremony.
